In Detail
Even modest dehydration — losses of just 1 to 2% of body water — measurably affects energy, mood, concentration, and physical performance. Symptoms can include fatigue, headache, difficulty focusing, irritability, and reduced exercise tolerance. Older adults, people on diuretics, and patients with high physical demands or hot environments are at higher risk.
Most adults do best with consistent fluid intake throughout the day rather than large amounts at once, and electrolytes matter — particularly sodium, which is often overlooked in patients eating clean, low-sodium diets and exercising regularly.
Persistent fatigue despite adequate hydration warrants a broader evaluation. Dehydration is one piece of the energy picture, not the whole picture.
