Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses hormone molecules that are structurally identical to those produced by the human body — primarily estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. This is in contrast to older synthetic or animal-derived formulations (such as conjugated equine estrogens or medroxyprogesterone) that the body recognizes and metabolizes differently.
Bio-identical estradiol and micronized progesterone are FDA-approved and widely available through standard pharmacies. Some patients also benefit from compounded preparations that allow for individualized dosing or alternative delivery methods. Either approach can be appropriate when guided by a careful clinical evaluation.
BHRT is not a single product — it is a category of hormones delivered in various forms: patches, gels, creams, troches, pellets, and oral capsules. The right delivery method depends on the hormone, the patient's symptoms, and individual preferences.
